In the past, each department had its own independent IT organization. But over the past few years, CNRA has been on a journey to unify IT operations, with the goal of leveraging economies of scale and becoming a better business enabler for the different departments.
The agency leveraged a software-defined approach so infrastructure and applications could be delivered much faster to the business. CNRA also decided to use public cloud resources to cost-effectively scale its infrastructure to handle the demands of peak usage periods.
Securing a Multi-Tenant Cloud Environment
Deploying a private cloud allowed CNRA to meet time-to-market requirements more efficiently. “By consolidating [the]disparate organizations’ IT infrastructures into a single, robust, private cloud-based shared-services environment, the agency can effectively provision computer resources, services, and information as departments’ business demands grow and change,” says Tim Garza, IT Director of CNRA and CIO of California Department of Water Resources.
However, the agency had to worry about isolation between the different departments, and it also needed to protect sensitive information while allowing access to authorized users. To fulfill the unique requirements of each department, CNRA deployed VMware NSX® network virtualization, which enables dynamic configuration of network and security services. In addition, the agency used VMware vRealize® Automation™ cloud automation software to enforce the consistency and reliability of all the IT services it delivers.
Managing a Hybrid Cloud
Part of the agency’s IT transformation was the realization that doing everything in house may not be the most economical way to meet the needs of the different departments. By leveraging public clouds, CNRA was able to stretch its resources and deliver IT services more cost-effectively.
However, this multi-vendor, hybrid world presented a management challenge. To operate its hybrid cloud at peak efficiency, CNRA decided to deploy the VMware vRealize Suite management platform.
